Think of Chennai – what comes to mind?

Usually the long time residents of a city have their own mental pictures of their city and when they are out of it, they need nothing more than the sounds, smells and/or sights of something familiar that triggers a flood of memories reminding them of their erstwhile home base. But in media depictions of a place, the standard props that are used for image association are the historical landmarks of that place.

For example, movies have for long shown the Statue of Liberty as a symbolism of America and within the US, if we get city-specific, then we have the unique skyscraper skyline that introduces New York city or the Golden Gate bridge to show San Francisco. Similarly, most Thamizh movies have always shown the two evergreen landmarks of Chennai – the Chennai Central station and the LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India) building to introduce the city and to show that the story has moved from the village (or another city) to the bustling metropolis of Madras, thus reinforcing these two edifices further in the psyche of most people new to the city. In fact, yours truly was inspired to start his ChennaiCentral blog much on these lines (as a sort of getting non-Chennai bloggers/readers introduced to the city much as many first-time travelers arriving by trains to Chennai get off at the Central Station terminus).

Here are the pictures of both the British-era style Chennai Central Station and the 14 storey LIC building (courtesy of this site).

Now, what is your image association with Chennai?

Most famous building in Chennai is Spencer’s Mall, old or not, it has it,s has on charm :).
I was just thinking after going through all th eposts on this blag, why can’t you run a post on hoardings in Chennai. In my experience, chennai is having fair share in numbers as well in quality. In my view, one of the best catchy hoardings are placed in Chennai.

Is it possible for chennai met bloggers to post latest pictures of the landmarks around chennai?

I am thinking along the lines of Ripon Building, the Southern Railways building (across from Central station), Santhome Church, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Madras University Buildings along the beach.
