Hmm… that’s got me interested. I think that Spencer’s phase 3 or whatevah’tiscalled is one of the ugliest interiors I’ve ever seen in a building. The sorry thing is, the developers and decorators with big budgets don’t seem to have any taste. I had recently been to another one of these malls-Chennai citi centre… awesomely ugly.
Much like most of our contemporary culture.. including (and I am part of it) our filmmaking, architecture is so wannabe that they imitate facades and styles without even understanding the basics. Take citi centre for example, they’ve tried ventian, baroque, corinthian… every decorative style under the sun, but almost as if they’ve seen all these in some blurry picture-book and wanted it replicated…! Like the film sets I saw in Ramoji Film citi… poor man’s Colosseum fringed with a bit of Gaudi (Egad)!!!

CCG more info please. The picture on the right, is that the original spencers? (Did it get burnt down or something?. Phase 3? Do they have vacant land in that part of the city or are they gonna knock something down and rebuild it?

Didn’t think much of Spencer plaza anyway, give me Mylapore and Renganathan street to shop in anyday.

As far as the really bad looking Phase 3 interiors go, I think it was designed to be a copy of the old Spencers building that was destroyed (CCG’s pic on the right). To evoke fond memories yada yada.

And yeah, Ellsworth Toohey recommended the Citi-Centre design ;)

I guess I am the only “persu” here to have actually been to the old spencers before it burned down. I hardly remember anything though, was a kid.

I used to love the Old Spencers building. Going up Mount Road in the good ol’ PTC, I used to crane my neck, through the crowds to catch sight of Spencers. It signiged Madras to me, next to Central Station of course.
Actually, in the good ol’ travelling only by PTC days, a ride down Mount Road, used to be a treat.
Must try it one of these days from a bus!

    sir,
its very bad that some shops inside the complex charge more than the printed rate for bottle drinks .example soft drinks two days back when i purchased some 200ml mango drink [slice] he charged me 9rupees a bottle while the mrp printed on its neck is seven rupees the shops name is [kolkata chats]selling snaks and cool drinks i hope its in phase three second floor, the authorities cocerned should check it and give strict instructions not to charge any extra money when the mrp is printed especially for soft drink bottels by which a name that spencer is resonabile can be attained.
