The city of Chennai is considered a DMK bastion, never has the ADMK except in 1991, riding a sympathy wave for Mr Rajeev Gandhi managed to win the constituencies in Chennai. Out of the 14 seats, DMK has always managed to hold onto atleast 10 seats. in 2001 when there a clear ADMK wave across the state, the DMK won 13 out of the 14 seats.

This time around, Amma as J Jayalalitha is fondly called has stormed into the DMK bastion of Chennai, and has won 7 of the 14 seats, winning some key DMK strongholds like Mylapore, Triplicane, Royapuram and Saidapet. This has suprised many, the DMK is probably regrouping and wondering how ADMK managed to penetrate their bastion. In Thousand Lights and Chepauk the DMK was expected to win, with their heavy weights contesting, and in Harbour where the party General Secretary Anbazhagan contested, he managed to scrape through, by polling 400 extra votes. The DMK’s voteshare in Chennai definitely has gone down, and the party needs to do some serious introspection if it is to regain its stronghold.

The most important factor in favour of the ADMK is none other than Amma, today she is in all probability the tallest leader in the entire state and also a combination of factors like law and order. Chennai has been peaceful under the ADMK regime, with the underworld being brought under control; this is probably one reason why Royapuram an area with a prominent underworld presence has voted for the ADMK. Secondly urban development, more precisely the building of parks and compulsory rainwater harvesting and handling of the recent floods has helped the ADMK.

One of the reasons could be the despotism of sumangali cable. Cable-tv subscribers in madras have it worst (compared to rest of metros in india). The rest of india watches all “premimum” channels like ESPN for free while madras/TN subscribers had to buy a “set-top” box. JJ’s latest ordinance (which never got passed) to take over cable was well received. Plus, the tsunami relief effort in madras was very good. All-in-all, JJ put in good effort in madras to earn those seats

Interesting. But what was it about the DMK that made it so successful in Chennai previously?
