Trivial Pursuit
Mine is as trivial as looking for a perfect milk shake place. In a large city it should be a pretty simple task to find a good place for milkshakes except that after about 40 different chocolate milk shakes in about 30 different places, I am still chasing an elusive target. A chocolate milkshake that tastes of chocolate instead of milk and sugar is such a hard find, believe me.
Forget chocolate milkshake, let us get far more general than that. Where do you get good (from perfect to good in just a paragraph – such desperation!) milkshakes in Chennai? I tossed this question at the Chennai Metrobloggers with terribly confusing results. Chandrachoodan goes
Anyway, to answer your question – T Nagar’s Pazhamudhir colai, at South(or North?) Boag road, just behind Residency towers serves decent mango shakes…they are open till 11, i think. Rams’ Milky World, in Gold Crest mall, Usman road (opposite Saravana’s monstrosity) has reeeeaaallly good ice-creams and shakes and light snacks.
But the best juices and shakes I’ve had are in Alwarpet – on TTK Road..Arvind Cool bar, where KB Dasan road meets TTK road is awesome. 10 bucks gets you a whole glass and half of super Sweet lime juice. 15 rupees for mango shakes (think and pulpy, like I like it)
Before I could try any of these places, Vatsan checks out Arvind Cool Bar and reacts with such an expression that I decide to pass it up for the moment. Meanwhile, Chandrachoodan adds Shakes and Creams in Adyar to his list of recommendations only to be vetoed by Vatsan again. By now,Keerthi tells me that I should listen to Vatsan because he is the God of Food things.
And you know what Vatsan does? He recommends Fruit Shop on Greams Road! I tell him that I have tried about half of the stuff on their Menu and while I like most of what I tried (the Mango Banana Smoothie for instance – a weekload of fat in one sinful glass tumbler), I still cannot find the chocolate milkshake I can close my eyes and say ‘perfect’ to.
Tell me Chennai – where do you get good milkshakes? What is your favourite place for ice-creams and milkshakes?
Update: Based on recos, the list so far is:
-Juice World at the CP Ramaswamy Road, Rangachari Road junction
-MilkShake Bar in the Subway food court, GN Chetty Road T Nagar (let me tell you – don’t ask for mango milkshake here. I tried not once but twice – utterly disappointing)
-Snofield, Amaravathy Complex, opp Music Academy
-Freez Zone, TTK Road, opp Shankara Hall
-Fruit Shop on Greams Road (but of course)
-Mocha (Lindt chocolate shake – thanks Tom)
how could u forget juice world? right at the CP Ramaswamy road, Rangachari Road Junction? that probably offers the best juices in town. for Rs 15 they offer you 1 and a half glasses to two glasses of Mango juice. it can get a bit sweet, so i suggest you tell them to add less sugar.
Machchan, is refill guarenteed every time ?
Um… Shakes and creams, Adyar? Can’t really say they have the “best” milk shakes, but it’s ok.
Anyone noticed how the best juice makers in chennai are almost always mallus?
You are most welcome to my home for a “proper” mango milkshake:)
Try the chocolate milk shake at Subway in G N Chetty road…
The Learner,
Your observation is right. This was the case in Bangalore as well. There were a lot of very nice juice shops run by Mallus.
In used to have chocolate milk shake at “Chit Chat” in mount road (teynampet). But those are my childhood days. I dont know whether the place still exists. It used to be a great place for milk shake lovers. You can also try “Snow Field” (at Amaravathi, opp to Music Acadamy). I prefer milk shakes prepared with blended icecreams, not the ones with the Italian icecreams.
@ keerthi,
yes da, its assured, the quantity depends on the amount of ice u want in ur drink. for instance, if u as for loads of ice in watermelon, u get almost 2 glassses da, all for 10 bucks
@Vatsan: :O did you tell me about Juice World? Hmm…
@Mukunth: thanks for the offer. I did pretty much the same – bought juicy mangoes and made my own thick shake.
@Aravind: Ah Chit Chat – I vaguely remember seeing it shut. Not sure if it is around still. I did try the chocolate milk shake at Snofield. It was sweet with badly melted ice-cream. Maybe I need to give it another shot.
Chit Chat has now morphed into a restaurant and a cafe – Shonali Muthalay of The Hindu did a review last week or so. http://www.thehindu.com/mp/2006/06/19/stories/2006061900480800.htm
I wonder what ‘Milk Shakes’
the street children like ?
What Juice bar they frequent ?
Do the patrons of ‘trivial pursuit’
ever share their Shakes with these children ?
I wonder ..
May be they visit CRUEL CAFE ?
I may be missing the obvious here, but what about the Lindt chocolate shake at Mocha? It’s ridiculously expensive @ ~Rs220, but it doesn’t disappoint.
Rs. 220.00 for a milkshake? Most of us would think twice before spending that much on a meal Tom
