P.T. Manoharan seeks bail in dowry case
Former vice-chancellor of Madras University P.T. Manoharan, his wife and their daughter have moved the Madras high court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with a dowry harassment case.
Television actress Nirmala, who allegedly had an illicit relationship with the ex-VC’s son, has also sought anticipatory bail.
Madhu Devi, the daughter-in-law of the ex-VC, committed suicide on July 1 allegedly because her husband’s family was demanding dowry. Naveenkumar, the ex-VC’s son, was also said to have an illicit relationship with Nirmala. Naveenkumar has already been arrested. Now, the former VC and his family have sought anticipatory bail.
Ms. Devi had apparently told her family on returning from her honeymoon that her husband had married her only for the money. She was given 500 sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs 1 lakh in cash as dowry, but the ex-VC’s family allegedly wanted more.
