Chennai Telephones – need for staff uniforms

One look at the topic and you might wonder why? We had an issue with our phone at home. There was some disturbance in the line and this went on for a couple of days. So, we called the Department to come and attend to it. Just today morning the bell rang at about 9.30am. At the gate were 2 middle-aged men, with a couple of metres of wires in their hands and an old telephone instrument. They said they were from the Telephones Department and we were happy to let them in and attend to the problem. They were in the house moving from one place to another for about one hour, fixed the problem and went. And everything was absolutely fine. No problems at all.

But,

we took the guys at face value. We actually don’t have a clue whether they are from the Department at all. We didn’t ask for any ID’s, nor they had uniforms. I am sure most of us wouldn’t have asked if in the same situation. We trust them. Simple.

What if it the 2 men had been a thief or a terrorist. It might be sheer exaggeration and would never be. But shouldn’t the local authorities look in to it. Can’t they provide uniforms to the employees and Photo ID cards. Like the Post Man. It is another issue that more than 90% of them don’t wear it. It will also bring in a greater degree of professionalism in to the Department and give us also a sense of comfort.

Can Chennai Telephones take a lead in this issue.
