Imam Ali accomplice arrested

The Madurai police on Sunday arrested an accomplice of Al Umma activist Imam Ali and seized two country bombs from him. Another activist was also arrested late in the evening. The Madurai commissioner of police M. Chidambarasamy said the police, which was on alert after the arrest of terrorists in Coimbatore, had uncovered a plot by an associate of Imam Ali to kill a man who he believed had informed the police about Ali’s whereabouts which resulted in his death in 2002. The plot was uncovered when the police took the 18-year-old youth, Sultan, an associate of Ali, was taken into custody for questioning after he was found moving in suspicious circumstances on Sellur road.

Sultan confessed that he had planned to kill Ibrahim, another accused in the Imam Ali escape case, who he said had informed the police about Ali’s whereabouts after he had escaped in March 2002 from Thirumangalam near here leading to his death in a police encounter in October that year. He said he planned to kill him when he came to court on Monday.
Imam Ali and his aide Hyder Ali escaped from custody when they were being taken back to the Palayamkottai prison after being produced in the Madurai court in connection with a case of conspiring to blow up important landmarks in Madurai including the famous Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple.
