When Chennai was Madras…
During the last book fair, I came across a book on Chennai called At Home in Madras – A Handbook, edited by S.Muthiah and published by the Overseas Women’s Club of Madras. There is a chapter called Keeping in Touch in the book in which the various ways people can keep in touch is enlisted. One of the sections has become quaint.
I am quoting from the book: “This was among the first value-added services to be privatized…Sprint RPG (Spencer Plaza), ICNET (Adyar) and Business India Information Technology (Purasawalkam) are operators running the service in “Madras.”
Guess what V. Ramnarayan and Sashi Nair, two communicators, are writing about? The service they are referring to is ….you might never guess, E-mail.
:)
The year the book was published is 1995.
