Sandwiches for Rs. 14 or less! No taxes extra!!!

For a moment forget those Club Sandwiches, the Chicken Supremes, the Tunas etc. Forget the sandwiches at your Galloping Gooseberries, Hot Breads, Sparky’s or wherever. I’m talking about the best sandwiches in town and the least expensive. Yes, the Alsa Mall sandwich guy. Let me start with his Bread Omlette. Now where on earth do you get one for Rs. 7 and this gooood. His bread is perhaps the softest, I noticed he had shifted from Brittannia to Modern Bread recently. The layer of spicy mint chutney just adds to the taste. The bread nicely toasted to a mild golden brown, not too crisp, yet crisp enough.

Course 2, opt for the Masala Cheese Toast, insist on some extra chutney. The melted cheese gels perfecty with the chutney and the masala sending your tastebuds in a tizzy. Course 3, opt for the simple veg. sandwich. Comes packed with cucumbers, onions, potatoes, tomatoe’s, yeah it is a meal in itself. Finish off in typical Chennai ishtyle with a water packet. There can be many Subways, Hot Breads, Giorgio’s and so on, but none can match this guy. Alsa Mall Annanukku oru O podunga.

I have had that Also Mall Sandwiches since 1993. It is simply irressitable!! Now, whenever I come to India I crave for them and never miss that during my trip. I think someone needs to point him out to a Venture Capitalist so that he can start something like Hot Breads or something like that.

Vin, I agree to what you say, but we have a similar sandwich guy in our cafeteria who is cheaper than the alsa mall guy. We get bread omlette’s for 6, plain veg for 5, masala cheese for 11, and we even have chicken toast etc, being a vegetarian, ‘ve not had :o)

Suresh, The cost of the sandwiches would go up with the establishment expenses n taxes factor coming in…so let things remain as is for the better of us :-) what say?

I bought a sandwich maker after seeing these guys work but it never pans out as good at home.
You get the best spicy sandwiches in Chennai there.

Yea, I always remember a huge crowd outside the cart, and wondered. Too many guys crowd around it, and make it a wee bit uncomfortable for approaching. Dinno twas so good, shall break the barrier next time I visit. Thanks for the tip :-)

Thanks for the detailed location, Vinod. I really like reading about all these places, but I’d humbly suggest that anytime you guys mention a place, either include a their URL or indicate the district and street name so that those not intimiately familar with Madras might have some hope of locating it and sharing in the delight. Armed with the Eicher Chennai atlas that should be enough. Cheers.

I know the reason for your anguish. Its because your last name is Adams.
