The people of Chennai – Intelligent or Indifferent?

There has been one thing about the city of Chennai that has been doing the rounds of my mind for quite some time. Certain events which have caused a national level agitation or curiosity have had no impact on this great city. People here have just continued with their normal lives. Classic examples, the recent reservation issue. The whole country was fuming, from Bangalore to Bongaigon, from Hyderabad to Haridwar. But we guys in Chennai sit peacefully as if nothing has ever happpened.

It didn’t affect the student population of the city at all barring some freak incidents. Or even the medicos strike. Our doctors weren’t really bothered, or atleast not to even a miniscule extent of what happened in the North. Or even the current Cola debate. We are sitting happy sipping whatever we like.

Now, for a moment look back. Reservation issue is forgotten, so has the medico strike and so will cola contamination in a couple of weeks. Were we the smart lot?One way to look at it is don’t waste your time in these issues as it means fighting a lost battle or the other way is unless somebody fights we will remain the way we are without any progress. So, as responsible citizens of Chennai are we treading the right path. Any comments?

Vinod, the real reason is TN has accepted reservations long time back and everyone in reconciled to it. Hence the reservation issue didn’t strike a chord in Chennai.

Neither. It’s the question of who outnumbers who and fear of attacks!

There is a definite fear factor in the city which prevents these agitations.

What about CAS? While the whole of India (exception of South Delhi) got to watch all the channels, Chennai was forced to buy a Set top box. Set top boxes were never a hit here but not an insect raised a voice against it either. No Star Sports, No ESPN, No HBO and of course No hard Feelings too, this is Chennai.
But in a way this also makes this city really peaceful, we rank way below in linguistic and Fanatic animosities as well.
