Food Facts of the Madras of Yesteryears
I was reading a quiz book which was actually made to commemorate 350 years of the city of Madras. That was about 16 years ago. Being the ardent foodie I’m, I couldn’t but just straight head to their “Madras Meals” section. Here are some interesting facts.
1. The first modern vegetarian restaurant in the city, that served Indian food on Marble-topped tables was Udupi Sri Krishna Vilas (anyone knows where is this now?) 2. The Oldest Chinese restaurant is Chungking, somewhere on Anna Salai, near LIC if I am right (how good is it today?) 3. The cake for Prince Andrew’s first birthday was cut by Queen Elizabeth at Rajaji Hall in Chennai was my made by –Bosotto Bros
I am quite sure Bosotto Bros is reduced to nothing now. Krishna Vilas and Chungking atleast do not figure in the list of popular or most talked about restaurants in town. So is the case with Jafar Ice Creams and the Buhari’s. Buhari’s are tring to reinvent now though.

i think udupi sri krishna is in perumbur
krishna vilas is opposite the high court.
not sure if sri krishna vilas is still in front of the high court. i am talking about 20 years ago. now to think of it, it might have been sri krishna lunch home? sorry :(
I think Jafar icecreams have closed down long time back. It used to be my favourite haunt when i was a kid especially for its jafar special icecreams which used to be served in huge glasses.
