Chennai Airport – New Departure Terminal

Pick any airport in the country. Be it Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or wherever else in the country. And compare them with Chennai. We will beat them hands down. Have you had a look at the new check-in counters at the Domestic terminal. Atleast 20 new counters and a spanking facility with LOTS OF SPACE. So, no more makeshift counters for the newer airlines. I went there yesterday and for a moment I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was just fabulous. The all glass walls and the design of the new counters, mostly steel if I am right (I didn’t go in) and the bright lighting would rival any other airport in the region.

The airport is probably well within city limits. Parking ain’t a problem at the airport. You have Bluetooth connectivity at Departure lounges, a net cafe, even Krishna Sweets and their Mysore Pa just in case you wanted to carry something for a dear friend. Officials from a leading French airline who recently visited Chennai were all praises about the airport. Infact one of the pilots of an International airline jokingly said, in Bangalore with some many IT companies around and such a small airport, I will have to fold my wings before landing. And all this with the airport still being controlled by the AAAI. Privatisation will just make it better.

Arrival experience at the international terminal needs to undergo some improvement. The baggage clearance takes lot of time. More often than not, the visitor entry to the international terminal gets banned because of terrorist threat. This also needs to be improved. Otherwise the visitors just stand outside the departure like and it is worser than Central / Egmore station or Koyambedu bus stand.

Another aspect which needs little bit improvement is the availability of the trolleys in the departure terminal. One ends up spending atleast 10 minutes to find an empty trolly.
