Chennai Trivia – War Memorial
Most of you must have seen the war memorial on the Beach Road just after the Island Grounds entrance. GVB had wrtten about it in Chennai Metblogs earlier. The above photo was taken by him. Now, the question.
The memorial in praise of the soldiers has inscriptions in four languages. Two of them are English and Tamil. What are the other two languages?
Telugu and Chinese? :D
French and Portuguese?
Chinese is 1 &…maybe German…or Urdu or ….hmmm
Telugu and Urdu ?.
I think Mahesh is right. I was obviously led astray (as the Chenthil hoped, I suppose ;)) by the word beneath ‘1962’.
Mahesh gets it right – Telugu and Urdu.
I guess the Chinese fooled a few people. That stands for the Chinese Aggression of 1962. It is not called Chinese War probably because we lost it :-).
The inscriptions on the surrounding walls mention the various battle fields where these soldiers lost their lives. You can find places like Flanders, Kilimanjaro, Balochistan and other exotic sounding names listed there. This place is definitely worth a visit.
