Where to party on New Year Eve?
Asks a long time reader. If you want to welcome the New Year with alcohol, almost all the star hotels have a party where you can welcome the New Year in a tipsy way. But be safe, have a sober driver with you. The cops would be extra vigilant on New Year Night; you don’t want to welcome the new year with a fine for drunken driving.
All the star hotels have a cover charge for the New Year party and they are generally exorbitant. If you want to go out for food alone, there are any number of restaurants in the city. Make sure that you call in advance and reserve a table, generally they are sold out on New Year’s eve. My current favorites are
Benjarong (Thai Cuisine), TTK Road Tel :42110061
Sigree(North West Frontier Cuisine) in Hotel Aruna Tel: 4255 4222
Casablanca(Multi cuisine and there is a bar in the same compound, Zanzibar) in Chittaranjan Road Tel : 42074994
The Crown (Roof top, kids aren’t allowed, Multicuisine) in Residency Towers Tel: 28156969
Southern Aroma (South Indian Cuisine), Residency Towers Tel: 2815 6363
601 (Bloody expensive, but it is once in a year right), The Park Tel : 4214 4000
Hip Asia (East Asian Cuisine), Taj Connemara – Tel : (91-44) 6600 0000)
Above Sea Level (fabulous rooftop restaurant) Raintree hotel – Tel : 4225 2525
Opal Inn, Hotel Ranjit – Tel: 28270521
Cascade (Oriental Cuisine) Khade Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam – Tel : 2825 3836
Red E Food Court (Multicuisine, has a separate kids play area) Tel : 2827 2514
These are the ones around my place, there are many more in Anna Nagar and Adyar areas.
So what am I going to do? Curl up in bed with some classic novels and welcome the new year with the decade old resolution of working on my first book.
Somebody mentioned that RedE is closed now, info as recent as second week of Dec ’06. I wonder…
V.I.P. AT GNANAMVIKA CANTEEN: This years catering at Narathagana Sabha is being conducted by GNANAMBIA CATERARS, On30th night by 10P.M. One political VVIP cum standing MLA was enjoying very much the foods there; For the delayed regular visitors the servers were regrettting of the non availabilit of food items due to late hours whereas all the items were being served to the said VVIP; more over all the side dishes are kept in the table in front of him in small cuttories; to say a dozen to 15 side dishes irresptive of the main course. it rememberebd me as a Jalatharangam Vidwan is sitting with his instruments in his front. The gentlemen was also enjoying the food very much as enjoying very (RARE RAGAS) which were being served in the direct supervision of the proprietoers and by their family members. I don’t know whetehr he is having such a honourable treatment in his PARTY and in his consituency or not. AMMA ONLY KNOWS IT!!!!!!
I am at Chennai for about a month now and enjoy the city life. The Besantnagar beach is one of my favourite hangout and many a times I land up at nearby restaurants.
I have been to Karaikudi, the Chettinad restaurant thrice. Unfortunately, every time I faced a peculiar problem. While I am eating, suddenly the waiter comes and starts picking up the bowls and dishes. While some of them are empty, some are NOT. Everytime I request him not to do this, another waiter comes back within a minute and repeat the same act.
I am wondering why the waiters at the restaurant are so unkind to me, do you think I am committing some cultural faux paus here?
I know I can just stop visiting that restaurant, but a posisble reason for such weird kind of behaviour from some Chennaiite will be very much welcome.

Ayan
