Two political satirists that Chennaiva(a)sis know

One of them wrote in English and got introduced to them thru print. The other wrote in Thamizh and got introduced to them thru cinema/drama. The former is no more. Thankfully, the latter is still alive and kicking. And to quote on the lines of a popular ad “Art Buchwald column-um, Cho-voda Thuglak-um padi, chinna vayasule adhai thaan naanum padichchen” :-).

Here are a couple of Buchwaldisms:

“An economist is a man who knows a hundred ways of making love but doesn’t know any women.”

“You can’t make up anything anymore. The world itself is a satire. All you’re doing is recording it.”

Yes. I do remember eagerly reaching to the last page on THE HINDU to read what Art had to say on World affairs and the literary world (even a dig at science occasionally). He did grow the literary spark in many a youth at that time.

Cho is indispensible to the world as Art was. MSV, Mellisai Mannar remarked that “Unakku Theriyaathu! Avan Nalaikki Nadakka Poratha Innikke Solliduvaan”. Truly his ESP combined with healthy cynicism and later a productive contribution to Indian politics as Rajya Sabha MP, are but vignettes of a multi-talented man.

Feel like saying “Cho, thou Art in heaven”. And to know we are left to deal with the likes of Anaon. What a sad state for all of us!
