31 die in shootout at Virginia Tech

Over a decade after the Columbine tragedy, there has been a more deadly attack on a US university. There’s a open thread going at DC Metblogs. Please go over there to voice your opinion on this atrocity.

The following is an excerpt of a late breaking story on Monday in AP, as the copy makes clear.

Blacksburg, Va.: A gunman opened fire in a Virginia Tech dorm and then, two hours later, in a classroom across campus on Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, government officials told The Associated Press. The gunman was killed, bringing the death toll to 31.
“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”
It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was shot by police or took his own life. His name was not released, and investigators offered no motive for the attack. It was not known if the gunman was a student.
The shootings spread panic and confusion on campus, with students complaining that the university did not warn them about the first burst of gunfire until more than two hours later.

Tragedy’s of this nature (20+ deaths in a single incident) occur almost everyday in India, How come when something like this happens in U.S it automatically becomes front page news. Is an American life more precious than the rest of us ?

Give Importance to Human Life, Ananth.
Whether it is one or 30.
When the fire incident in kumbakonam school happened, the whole world was talking about and expressed their condolences.
I was in Turkey at that time, and i came to know the incident only after viewing BBC.
So we express condolences for Loganathan and other Virginia victims.

MY HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF MR. LOGANATHAN.

WHY HAVEN’T ANYONE CONDOLED THE DEATH OF RAILWAY CROSSING ACCIDENT NEAR KANCHIPURAM OR FOR THAT MATTER THE EXPLOSION IN TAMIL NADU LAST WEEK WHICH KILLED SCORES OF PEOPLE. IT REALLY PAINS TO SEE THAT NONE HAVE SO FAR BROUGHT THESE TRAGEDIES.

EVERY HUMAN LIFE IS PRECIOUS, LET THE PSEUDO-INTELLECTS AND THE ENGLISH PRESS WHO JUMP TO CARRY PHOTO’S AND REPORT OF ANY AMERICAN TRAGEDY GIVE SOME IMPORTANCE TO THEIR FELLOW COUNTRYMEN.

SUBMISSIVE ATTITUDE OF WE INDIANS IS TOO DEEPROOTED TO GET AWAY FROM OUR BLOOD…..

Americans give more value to life than Indians — that’s the way I see it. Maybe, we’re all numbed because our population is 1 billion plus and not just 300 million.

Yeah we’re all really shocked by the recent shootings at Virginia Tech. We don’t know if the immediate response by the administration was sufficient to contain the threat, and it’s unclear what exactly motivated the killer. Now all we can do is mourn for the victims…

I came to know from my friend T N Krishnan that Professor Loganathan who was killed in the shoot out was his batchmate in IIT, Kanpur and stayed in the same hostel in adjacent rooms. Professor Loganathan hails from Gopichettipalayam in Tamilnadu. My condolences to Prof Loganathan’s family and to the families of others who lost their lives in the gruesome incident.

My deep condolences to all the families who have lost their kith and kin in one of the deadliest shoot out`s ever in the history of US.Having said that i also request the college authorities all over the US to make education and its adjacent surroundings more stress free and easy going to ease the minds of students from taking to such horrendous and bastardly acts which mean nothing to the development of mankind. It does not matter whether it is an american life or an indian life is lost but the matter of the fact is some beautiful life`s that were to live fully have been lost.

My Condolences are with so many families who have lost their kith and kin in the recent Railway crossing in TN and also in the recent bomb blast and with all people who are dying a tragic death every day all over the world.

Well Said Ananth and Srivatsan. Innumerable tragedies of this nature happens in India and there is no one to raise to the front page (&that too on a Chennai Metro blog which is so unrelated to the incident). We need to learn to better appreciative of fellow Indians.

“Americans give more value to life than Indians — that’s the way I see it. Maybe, we’re all numbed because our population is 1 billion plus and not just 300 million.”

Yes Americans give more value to Life than India but the reason is not 1 billion; its the attitude and the way you are brought up. It starts from the school, we have messed those (and still messing up) and hence it would have been the same no matter if it is 1B or 0.3B!! and sadly it will continue to remain the same..
