Books at a Bargain
Now, bargain it might be called, good or bad depends on what you are looking for and what you end up finding. Chenthil alerted me to this sale and indicated that paperbacks of thrillers were available at great deals.
Off I went to get myself a bargain – I’d imagined that the old Higginbothams board would still be up and that the basement shop might have airconditioning. Wrong on both counts. There is no board, just a stairway that descends towards the left of the Nilgiris building. Once you reach the basement, you will find plenty of books, noticeably thrillers in paperbacks piled everywhere, just as Chenthil had mentioned. Not much of a thriller person myself, I snooped around for other books. I did not find any classics, for instance, until I moved a set of paperbacks to find that behind every prominently displayed thriller was tucked away a gem of a classic. Poor Henry James was finding it hard to breathe, so hidden was he. I managed to find good additions to my James collection. Also found a worthy title by Clive James at what I thought was a good bargain.
So yeah, pack in patience, a water bottle, a towel and throw out expectations. You’ll have fun at this place.
