Madras by Night…

…is one of the earliest of Cho’s dramas. I experienced a “Madras by Night” ride in an auto just a few minutes back since we are in the midst of a major product rollout at work and this has involved a few late-nighters. It was wonderfully serene and peaceful coming home at 3 in the morning with hardly any traffic on the roads, but the best part of it was that there were still sufficient numbers of people on the roads, either driving a vehicle or squatting/walking. Just shows why this part of the world scores the lowest on petty street crime. When you don’t have the kind of climate that would keep people indoors all the time and thus make it easy for a few unsavory elements on the roads looking for opportunistic crime, then the street crime graph will never rise in such a hot and humid city. Anyway, I am hitting bed at a time in a city when others will wake up to the sweet sounds of the “Suprabhatam” and that probably makes me a little less of a Chennaivasi (since I never seem to follow the traditional routine of this city of “early to bed and early to rise” :-)).

As someone who walks back home from late night hangouts after 1am, ill attest to the fact that its pretty safe if you know the streets well.

My mom may freak out and my friends think im nuts, but theres nothing i enjoy more than that serene atmosphere and the night air.

Maybe ive just been lucky, nothing untoward happened. Anyone else here half mad as i am?

I guess ‘security’ as a social issue in the night time is a parameter better gauged by women. Just by virtue of sex, we men are probably insulated from 95% of the security issues in India. On the other hand, if you are comparing the security scene in Chennai vs. the ones in other countries, I agree. We certainly have lesser cases of mugging etc.
