My friend Arvind points me to this story in the News Today. The city’s rivers are, according to the paper, going to be cleaned up and used as waterways.

Replying to DMK member Raja’s query in the Assembly, he said desilting of Cooum and Adyar rivers besides the Buckingam Canal would be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 472 crore. In this connection, proposals have been sent to the Central government to getting its approval.

He said another scheme – Jawaharlal Nehru Waterways Development at a cost of Rs 346 crore has been formulated and sent to the Centre for approval.

After getting the clearance, he said that all the waterways in Chennai city would the developed. Meanwhile, the State government is initiating some works at a cost of Rs 85 crore.

I will for now hold my enthusiasm (along with my nose) No point getting all high and breaking out the champagne till the act actually happens, no?

Was kinda discussing the same with parents when we were drivin over cooum tonight. That if it had been Venice or NY, they would’ve made this a beautiful canal with water taxis. Let’s waait and see what’s in store. And wait is sth I can almost certainly do.

I think this was in the papers a month or so ago. Something to do with yet another World Bank kadan, I think.

Breaking out the Champaigne? Breaking out a bottle of clean water would be more appropriate. ;-)

i so wish this happens..and so true we should actually have a very good asset which other cities do not have just imagine if the cooum and the adyar river turned into a place where boats and water taxi would be..all in all there are very slim chances that it might happen atleast in the next 10 yrs or so

Desilting is one thing, diverting the sweage and treating it before releasing it into water bodies is another. Besides, what about moving out slums along side the cooum..

    Easier said than done
