New Flyover at GN Chetty Road
A new flyover is being constructed in the GN Chetty Road – Thirumalai Pillai Road Junction (better known as the Vani Mahal Junction). Hence GN Chetty Road is now a single lane road for a stretch, leading to traffic snarls during peak hours. The notice board in the area says that the project is expected to be completed by June 2008.
I have travelled in this road for the past few years and didn’t see any need for a fly over here. May be the traffic planners have more data to put up a flyover here. In any case, be prepared for traffic snarls if you are travelling in this area for the next few months.
I assume some bureaucrat genius came up with an optimization formula that calculated the total cost, after considering utility and traffic obstruction during construction. Boom, you have a flyover on GN Chetty Road.
the dmk administration seems to be obsessed with building flyovers. actually mini-flyovers – that only the purpose of crossing a junction only to end in another! each of the flyovers built in 96-’01 ends at a traffic signal.. they’ve merely shifted the bottleneck by less than a kilometer. is this going to happen in tnagar too?
we need all the flyovers, expressways and grade separators that we can get, cause our strongest USP over bengalooru – infrastructure is now bursting at its seams..
major flyovers tht are needed:
1. every single junction of mount road
2. every single junction of ponamalle high road
3. sterling road – college road junction
4. valluvar kottam jn
5. Koyambedu – Porur Jn
Mini flyovers needed:
1. god alone knows how many in sowcarpet, perambur, tondiarpet and purusawalkam
–
whats on currently:
Major flyovers:
1. madhya kailash
2. kathipara jn
3. tiruvanmyur jn
4. chennai airport
mini flyovers:
1. gn chetty – tp road
2. chamiers road
Also, I read somewhere that a TN Member of Parliament has sought to make several feeder flyovers to the national highways and chennai bypass highway to make getting in and out of chennai faster

If you guys know of any other announcements, then do contribute! If you guys wish for any other flyovers, than do pitch in!
“each of the flyovers built in 96-’01 ends at a traffic signal..”
Not true – the one going over Radhakrishnan Salai does not end at a signal either way…the Luz signal is too far and so is the other end at Peters Road.
@annan,
sorry mate, “each flyover ends at a junction” – what has happened in most of these cases is that the situation has become so bad over the last few years that signals have popped up. the r.k. salai flyover now has a signal at the nilgiris junction; ditto for the c.p.ramaswamy iyer road – you have one at the kirtilal junction. the thiruvanmyur branch and the l.b. branch of the l.b. road flyover both end in signals.. again there was no signal at the telephone exchange a few yrs ago. there are 2 small flyovers on peters road itself.. the royapettah high road flyover ends at the junction of balaji nagar and lloyds road – it won’t be too long before a signal is installed there (or is there an inactive one there already?)
bad, myopic planning..
@ tsk tsk
the idea of having a flyovers across mount road and p.h road is an amazing idea.. every time i get stuck at one of those junctions i wonder why our politicians haven’t thought about that. maybe its because they just drive past with their sirens :)
In your opinion, there is no need for a flyover at that point – but the politicians and the contractors who have their eyes on the government treasury need it! so be it – let the flyovers multiply, whether there is actually a need or not!
Thiruvanmyur junction / LB road surely needs a flyover .. or else allow right turn at madhya kailash – OMR junction.
woof! the traffic jam on evenings !!!
For all of you who says that there is a signal after Flyovers, these signals are installed after the construction of the Flyover. Those would have been installed even if the flyover is not there. The Current Flyovers help you in skipping some signals, so you save time.
as long as we dont have intersection in a flyover ..construct one anywhere you want!
