In the days when we used to live on Mandapam Road in Kilpauk, we used to walk our dog in the vicinity. One of the roads we used to take him down fairly frequently was Taylor’s Road. So it was with some interest we saw a shop come up on the edge of a large compound with a bungalow. No it wasn’t on the sidewalk. The owners made a gap in the wall and created the shop, and, lo and behold, it had the most luscious mangoes at reasonable prices!

It appears that they have a farm off the ECR near Cuddalore, and grow a variety of mangoes there. A part of this produce is trucked to Chennai for sale at their own outlet on Taylor’s Road. They have Banganapalli, Imam, Sindhu, Sindoori and other varieties. The sorting and ripening room is just behind the store, so the whole place is suffused with this wonderful smell of ripe mangoes. You will find that the mangoes are all sorted and of uniform size and quality. You will not find damaged or over ripe mangoes placed artfully in the racks to disguise their condition. You can choose all the mangoes you want personally, with the staff there to assist you.

But be warned, this is a seasonal shop. Come the end of the season they close, only to open again at the first hint of summer and the start of the water melon season, for it appears they grow water melons on the farm too. So it is that, even after we moved miles away to Perungudi, we make it a point to visit this shop when we are in town during the season to stock up on the fruit they have on offer. Given their quality, focus, prices, cleanliness, knowledge and interest, I’d venture to say that this is the best mango shop in Chennai! Check it out!
