No evidence for Rama: ASI

Over 500 party workers of the BJP were on Wednesday arrested in Chennai and across the state as they attempted to block roads demanding that the Union government protect the Ramar Sethu instead of destroying it.

This comes on a day the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court saying there is no historical evidence for Lord Rama or Ramayana. It clarified that the Ramar Sethu also called Adam’s Bridge is “not a man-made formation but a natural formation made of shoals/sand bars, which are possessed of their particular shape and form due to several millennia of wave action and sedimentation”.
In other words, there’s no bridge at all. It was just a formation caught on a NASA photograph and made its way into the news.
As if on cue, Mr L. Ganesh, state president of the BJP, who led the party’s protest in the city, is now claiming that there are thorium reserves in the area around the Ramar Sethu. In a ‘rather deft stroke’, he tied this up with the 123 agreement India has signed with the US. He has asked why we signed the deal to get thorium from the US when we have plenty of it right here near the Ramar Sethu.
Wonder whether now a team of experts will have to check that one up?

I have a very simple question. In place of Rama’s bridge, had it been Allah’s bridge, would the government have gone ahead and demolished it?
It is we Hindus who are tolerant of Dravidian movements etc but when it comes to other religions, they are all sacrosanct..What hypocrisy from the so-called secular elite???

    Dear Friends,
Mearly looking at a snap from a the skies may not tell you the whole story. This must be aided by ground work. And the ground work shows that atleast 5 places there was a filling work that took place. And WE Indians (read, Hindus’ , Christians, Muslims ) believe that this was done under orders from Bhagwan Rama. As for as Thorium deposits, there is an estimated 3.6 Lakh tons of Thorium deposits. Please refer to the BARC website. And we are 5 years away from developing our own Thorium reactors. Anyways, there need not be any discussion on this. WE HINDUS…Indians believe this to be built by Rama. and It is our heritage and there is conspiracy to destoy this. As said, we will die or/and kill our enemies to defend the Setu. Our enemies could be Europeans or Americans or Chinese.

    Hi all,

The point of the Ramayana is not about a monument or two. It is about the fundamental ethical conduct- the victory of reason and virtue over anger, greed and pride. It is an ancient tale that is remarkable in its geographical sweep and accuracy. I for one, am less concerned about the historicity of lord Rama. What matters is the message of the tale that will remain forever. IMHO the decision on the Ramar Setu needs to be made on the basis of economic benefits accruing vis-a-vis any environmental degradation that this development might cause rather than impossible-to-establish/ disprove evidence of linkage to the Ramayana. This would be valid no matter the religious denomination that it derives from.

I must admit I am very sceptical about the Thorium deposit argument considering the source.

It is easy to see everyone as enemies, conspiring against us and plotting. The plain fact is everyone has their lives to lead. I would urge us not to get emotional; our true heritage is that of the triumph of wisdom over banal instincts. That is the message of the ancient texts- they live in all of us and in the way we conduct ourselves with dignity and confidence. If I have to kill or hurt someone to ‘defend’ my faith, I would consider my faith to be very shallow.

Again, lest I am misunderstood I am named after the lord Rama, am proud of our heritage and have all respect for the religiosity of others.

Fath needs no proof. It is related to beliefs and convictions. Non-believers dub it superstition. Geologists and oceanographers, well versed and qualified in their disciplines, are perhaps more comptent to express their opinions on whether Ram Sethu is man-made or natural formation etc.

Such matters, which need in-depth study, knowledge, experience and scholarship of a high order, cannot be left to be decided by mediocre experts, least of all government archaeologists, as they are ill-equipped to handle such scholarly issues, considering their busy schedules and pressure on them for `results.’

Just as compounders are not considered as doctors, midwives as gynaecologists or screw-driver flaunting mechanics as qualified and competent engineers, one doubts about the credibility of government archaeologists. There maybe some experts among them, but their voice maybe miffed by the powers-that-be.

Anyway Lord Rama is lucky enough to have been resurrected after a two-day banishment by the `powers’ who in their infinite wisdom found his very existence an illusion and a myth. He was twice unlucky – in childhood, he was banished to forests for 14 years. In Sept 2007, his very existence was dubbed myth and banished for 48 hours before his resurrection.

The way you wrote the letter is an ideal way of thinking.
But when the other side is belonging to an unethical bunch of goons.Forget about your ideals.your own existence will be at stake.
That is what is happening in india.
some Parasurams should rise in hinduism.
why should hindu temple money go to govt.
when money given to mosques is getting contributed for terrorism inthe name of religion in india and money given in church for conversions.(contributions are at their discretion)
why should reservations be given to muslims who do not participate in national policies like family planning.
They dont sing national anthem. They dont speak native language.
Are still hindus ruled by auragajebs
    It appears so for me.
we donot have unity.we dont have the will to uplift our fellow hindus.
Think of unity, Forget the differences of caste. Preach that bhagavatgita says god is one, He is omnipotent and omnipresent.
    preserve your culture.Have pride
Hindus are being ruled for the past 1000 years
    Its a shame.Realise it.
