‘Couples can hold hands in public’

Finally, the city police has grudgingly acknowledged that couples can hold hands in public. Thank you very much for this, but what is this statement about indecent behaviour. Mr Nanchil Kumaran, the city’s new police commissioner, has said that police action will, however, continue against indecent behaviour.

Who’s to decide what is indecent? Can the learned commissioner decide that? In the past, we have known that the police have cracked down on innocent couples just for being together. They are often asked private questions like — are they married and do their parents know of their relationship. I have often wondered why the police bother to do this. But this is a topic that polarises us, with many among the “upright citizens” of the city believing that couples should not fraternize in public. What do u feel?

Let’s say a couple is kissing in the beach. What is wrong with that? Don’t they do this all the time in beaches across the world? Or do you think our culture gets affected by such “immoral” behaviour?

Most of the time, the police constables on the beat are looking to make a quick buck, and they bank on the fact that couples on the beach do not want any trouble, so they will part with some cash. However, for a police officer, a Commissioner, to make these comments are unwarranted, and he is simply wasting his time instead of focusing on real issues, like crime or traffic (which is a real major problem, of late). I do not understand why police in India are opposed to a guy and a girl to be together in public (cultural reasons), when they turn a blind eye to public consumption of alcohol (is that not against culture?). And who are the police to acknowledge the legality of holding hands? That is not their job.

Mr. Kumaran, I would appreciate if you could focus on crime and related issues, thank you.

Ya… And I suppose peeing on walls in full public view is most decent.. WTF.. The cops themselves must engage in that…

The article itseld and the comments are just for making arguments sake. All of them well aware that what is decenr and what is indecent. Can they do these activities in front of their parents or child even at their home. Just to say some thing don’t write as heros just supporting the unwanted activites, which you yourself hesitate to do in the public. No need to refer the Police Commissioner as what is decent and what is indecent.

this is really sickening to see such a irritating behaviour of these super cops, instead of catching hold of the criminals and theives they are enjoying their work at beach.Of course these police have a protected place to make love at their stations with full security, but these poor lovers cant even sit and talk freely at beach. The worse part is couples living in joint families come here to discuss their issues freely, but even here they come and ask them alot of unwanted questions. So married couples wear an photo identity while going to beach and of course lovers get a permission letter from their parents before going to beach.
