Toll Gate, Meals, and Mini Meals

I have been recently travelling till Toll Gate on a daily basis. I spend my days there. The RBI subway is a cut off point, after that the city changes. Beyond that, Chennai feels like a small town. Since I have been spending my days in Toll Gate, I have been forced to have lunch there.

Being a vegetarian, the numerous biryani shops are out of bounds for me. The area, especially Thiruvathiyur high road is filled with numerous restaurants which claim to serve “High-Class Non Vegetarian” or else Biryani. In other parts of the city, there are a few shops which specialise in biryani, but here almost all shops specialise in non vegetarian food.

Most of these are out of bounds for me, I am forced to visit the lone vegetarian restaurant. Even the vegetarian restaurants there have an interesting concept. They don’t serve the ubiquitous meals. They serve what is called ‘Mini-Meals’, which consists of various mixed rices, like kothamalli rice, tomato rice, sambhar rice, curd rice, along with a vegetable, kurma and parotta.

This is strange, because even in small town Tamil Nadu meals are served almost everywhere, but not here.

Remember this Vatsaa mama, thevidia paiya , enda pro brahmin articlesa ve eluthire badu paiya. Remember this one wrriten by u some time ago – Lok Paritran To Contest 6 Seats In Chennai
posted by Vatsan at 7:11 AM on April 11, 2006.

Ennada achu un Lok Paritran-Thevidia train hehehehe. Listen up why don’t u for a change write something which addresses to people of all classes and especially all castes. If you accept people having non veg meals so will people accept u having veg meals. I really respect ur feelings abt veg meals however ur satirical remark abt people having non-veg meals is a fact i condemn. Why don’t mamas like u actually join hands with everyone and work towards uplifting our nation dude. Ur resentful attitude and demotivating articles on pro brahmin idealogy is pathetic. Why don’t u write about the fall of Lok PAritran for a view on how parties with noble idealogies fail and can let people know abt the other faces of the party. You can take my suggestion in a sportive way or u can still remain the same and continue to stink gloriously in the tair (curd) rice shit stink!

    django:

I am no Brahmin and probably Vatsan’s articles have a certain tilt to it, but to use foul language and personal attacks are un-called for. We all need to work hard towards unifying our society and personal attacks don’t help in anyway.

I did not find anything that was offensive to non-vegetarians in what ‘Vatsan’ wrote. This writeup is a vegetarians perspective of what he goes through when he is looking for food around the Toll Gate area.

BTW Vatsan, if you cant find veggie food there, it is all to do with lesson no.1 in our economy class in school. If there is little demand for veggie food in Toll Gate, there will be little supply of it.

And Django, you are bad representative for non-vegetarians, as you have got angry for no reason and used foul language and hatred in your remarks. I am sure it has nothing to do with the food you eat, but your remark forces me to think so.

Curd Rice…..you seem to be using a phrase that purportedly shows you as a very cool guy. Please dont tell me that you really wanted that person to ‘lick your dick’ (try picturizing that for a minute). Yuck man.

Tamizhan, the original comment left a very bad taste for anyone who read it.

Sometimes you have to pay back using the same coin make the other person understand that there is a limit to the term Freedom of Speech.

If anyone feels that I was very happy is passing these comments then they are mistaken. I can’t keep quiet when educated guys make silly mistakes..

Let the world learn the facts of Vegetarianism and yogurt or curd or “tair(curd)shit stink!”

A day will come when there are no more animals to eat, everyone will have to be a Vegetarian.

    History of Vegetarianism
The earliest records of Vegetarianism as a concept and practice amongst a significant amount of people concern ancient India and the ancient Greek civilization in Southern Italy and in Greece in the 6th century BCE. In both instances the diet was closely connected with the idea of nonviolence towards animals (called ahimsa in India) and was promoted by religious groups and philosophers.

Yoghurt or Curd has been enjoyed in much of the world for at least 4,500 years. Originating from central parts of Asia and India, and southern and central Europe, it is now eaten almost everywhere in the world. Probably no other food product can claim such an illustrious history and popularity, while also being healthy and nutritious, and extremely cheap and easy to make at home.

Seeing the kind of comments that this otherwise perfect post has got, it looks that the beginning of end of Chennai Metblogs is near..

Moderators, what are you doing ? Try to remove offensive posts like the ones above.

North Chennai (or to be precise North east madras – the region from Villivakkam to Ennore) is quite different place from South Chennai .

Chennai (like all other major cities) is much more diverse than what we realise. North Chennai(or rather North east Chennai) has a totally different social-economic profile. You dont find IT Parks or Nokia factories over there, but instead Truckyards. It can be infact considered to be a city of its own.

Wow!!!! I read the comments first before reading the actual post. And guess what? I really don’t think Vatsan is that wrong here. Nobody said anything about being pro-vegetarianism or casts or religion. Vatsan is just observing that he was looking around for a veggie eat out and couldn’t find any. I don’t really see what’s wrong with that? Damn it! He wants a veggie place to have food and there’s none that he could find. I mean, how offensive is that? Chennai is a metro and I personally would expect Chennai to have equal number of veggie eatouts as non-veggie eastouts.

Obviously not, judging by the some of the crap here…
