Chennai Ultimate

The Ultimate sport, played with a Frisbee, originated in the US of A around 1968. Then on it has attained huge popularity and now has international clubs with professional players and associations backing them up.

This rugby cross of basketball game was brought to Chennai four months back by Manu, Narayanan and Shankar, who were part of the ISB, Hyderabad, Ultimate team. Since then this game has gained momentum and popularity in Chennai to an extent that the first Ultimate Tournament is going to be held this November at Bessie Beach.

According to wikipedia:

Ultimate (sometimes called ultimate Frisbee in reference to the trademarked brand name) is a non-contact competitive team game played with a 175 gram flying disc. The object of the game is to score points by passing the disc to a player in the opposing end-zone, similar to an end-zone in American football or Rugby. Players may not run while holding the disc. Ultimate is distinguished by its Spirit of the Game–the principles of fair play, sportsmanship, and the joy of play.

I joined this club a few months back and have got addicted to this sport. Right now about 35 of us play regularly at Bessie beach, every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at 5:30 am in the morning. Since the sport is non-contact, even a few girls have joined us over the months. We have also managed to attract a lot of photographers, who turn up to take some pictures of us in action.

If you are interested, do feel free to drop by and learn the game and embrace the spirit.

Chennai is becoming a center for diverse sport! Few would think this metro has organized events for sports like Rugby, sailing, canoeing etc. maybe the Frisbee will grow to this stature!
