I wish I could Fly. I wish we all could.

Well, if you are wondering what this woeful statement is about, it all started after hearing the news that the Chennai Corporation has sanctioned the construction of Six, yep SIX new flyovers, a few bypass roads and apparently even a few underground roads are in order – all for a cost in the tune of Rs. 150 crores.

It’s not the cost that astounds or scares me, but its the numbers and the term “flyovers”.

I have unconsciously developed this impression that the entry into chennai is denoted by the ever-going construction of the Kaththipara Junction – which I hope my generation lives to see functioning in full style, and the newer work that has begun in T-nagar and the nearby areas, making driving in Chennai a literal nightmare.

Now, to top all of this, six more. I am almost tempted to spread open a Chennai map and see which area is going to be the next that they are going to sabotage and take over, but I guess these are matters we go through under the name of Infrastructure development right?

I really wish I could fly over the “to-be” flyovers.

I came to know recently that the flyover near IIT on Sardar Patel Road has structural weaknesses and the MTC buses, when full, avoid going over the flyover and takes the road below. Also the buses going towards the LB Road does not use the flyover starting from Malar Hospital in Adyar because the approach to LB Road in the flover is very narrow.

I do beleive that these pathetically maintained busus would simply not have the power to climb up the gradient, rather than the bridge have structural weakness!! Two buses following each other could also have equal weight effect which could cause structural failure if the bridge is weak.

If enough land is acquired around these proposed flyovers, I am sure there would nt be any need for flyovers at all. At Kathipara, this is very apparent. Bigger flyovers can be built much later – if required.

One of the most pressing ‘need’ for more and more flyovers, is the amount of money involved and therefore the potential for money to be ‘made’.

    GVB,

Ever travelled on a 19B/K or any other bus from Saidapet? Those buses, when crowded, struggle to shift gears and hit 30 kmph, let alone wheeze up a flyover, which is located right after a bus stop. No way. The drivers, exercising better judgment, stay firmly on level ground and try to reach their destinations without incident.

Nothing wrong with the flyover, it was, after designed by IIT folks and built by ECC (of L&T fame).

    Vijay,

suffering a small pain of needle is worth to get cured!!!!

Think postively, in the midst of all kind of politics the city is getting something atleast now.

    GVB,

    >> “structural weaknesses”
just curious to know, if you have any proof for this

i think the main usage for that adayar bridge is for 2/3 wheeler and cars, not for MTC busses.

These flyover are doing their job as they divert this large volume of the traffic

    Flyovers to relieve congestion!!
These will definitely enrich all those involved in this as a huge amount is going to be spent but the public will toil as before

No. This is not correct. We can compare for ourselves the traffic situation in chennai’s bottle neck areas like royapettah, teynampet, new college signal before the construction of the flyovers and the traffic situation after the construction. We have to only pity the chennai corporation which takes on all the blame irrespective of whatever plans they bring in to regulate the traffic. after all its so easy to write in the blog about traffic management than making sure that traffic flows smoothly on the roads.

There are some people here who are going to blame anything and everything the DMK government does. Instead of issue based criticism people have one item at the back of thier mind when supporting or criticising DMK and that is the “DMK’s support to reservation”

    krishna,

they are not magicians, to do a magic and bring up the road… in the midst of all problem they are doing their best.

Most of the IT project itself doesn’t happen as scheduled. Imagine project with gr8 volume as IT Highway, u got 2 have big schedule variance!!!

    Great news… 6 new flyovers… great!
But when are they planning to start all these…
When are they planning to complete the existing projects… no one knows.

Whenever there is a traffic problem, everyone blames on infrastructure. I do not think that is the real issue in Chennai. Here the problem is with “Traffic Discipline”. Whether we get 6 new flyovers or 6 new lanes… we are going to face the same issues.
