Super Kings. Really? That’s the best name we can come up with?

Well, this might be a tad late for this now, but some one please tell me the best name that Chennaiites could conjure up in a naming contest for their own IPL team is "Chennai Super Kings"?

"Super" Kings?

My wife does not watch cricket and I asked her what was the first thing that came to her mind when she heard the name "Chennai Super Kings", and with absolutely no hesitation, she said "Cigarettes". Like Wills Filter Kings.

Of course, on the other hand, at least Mr Jumaani didn’t make this one "Superr Kiings".

But still, "Super Kings"?

I mean, Chennai Gadjee Kings sounds better. Or perhaps they should have paid tribute to the brilliant ad campaign of the successful Chennai Superstars and named this team Chennai Jujubees.

Or Chennai Macchis

Or even something to sporty like Chennai Killadis

What do you think?

I agree with you Ashok, ‘Super Kings’ sounds INCREDIBLY stupid. They might as well have called the team ‘Chennai Wannabes’. I discussed the naming issue with a friend of mine and he suggested ‘Chennai Lions’ or ‘Chennai Tigers’, both of which, I think, sound better. However, I pointed out to him, ‘Chennai Tigers’ could be interpreted as ‘Tamil Tigers’, and that’s not necessarily an association you want people to make.

I think someone just literally tranlated maharaja into ‘Super Kings’. The problem is that the english version is aweful. I would actually not mind if it were Chennai Maharajas instead (even though it is not anywhere close to being good), but Super Kings is just right aweful.

why they copy ICL team name!!!!

They should have named it CCMK

CCMK – Chennai Cricket Munnetra Kazhagam

as chennai is famous for their political parties

Kings reminds one instantly of cigarettes. Incredibly bland branding for sure. Chennai Sharks or Rockers as in the movie Chennai 600028 were infinitely better.

how does one emote to a name like super kings and cheer for it? … it has nothing in common to chennai either?

Atleast ICL superstars played on Kollywood hero stereotype

How about the local teams’ name – Mambalam Mosquitoes could be turned into Madras Mosquitoes.

you are quite right on this. i also felt little uncomfortable with this name. dont think it will create initial good impression. already chennai has got a reputation of people who eat and sleep cricket but doesnt produce adequate quality cricketers.
i would suggest something like Chennai cholans or Madras Powers or something that combines the tradition of Chennai / Tamil nadu with the name.

I agree. Chennai superstars itself was very good and it already reached indian mass. I think, India cememts wants to loose money. Kings sucks.

super kings is not a bad choice, I personally like it. I can see the name getting popular and I buying a super kings merchandise once they win the championship.

btw, I love the name ‘Chennai Veerans’ for the hockey league we have, unfortunately no one cares about that team, which desperately needs some fan following.
To author, keep cribbing, you doing a good job!

Well…Even I think that we could have come up with a better name…I’m satisfied with the team but no with the name…rather they should have taken a leaf out of the hockey league… I would have gone in for something like " Chennai Express " or even " Chennai Blitz "…
