An open letter to the Chennai Corporation

Dear esteemed Corporation,

Thank you, firstly and congratulations on the removal of the hoardings. In your new found zeal to do, you’ve even brought down legit, absolutely over-the-table billboards. But I am not complaining. It does look good. Especially the 20th instance of a faded-brown roof top and faux-art-deco balconies. I also love how the city’s characteristic colours have popped out. While earlier we had the boring reds and oranges and blacks and pinks and yellows and blues, we now have the very interesting moss-green and sun-dried-brick-brown. Quite a morale booster in the morning.

Attempted sarcasm aside, dear Corporation of Chennai, I suggest you work on the wires that clutter up our city’s (um…) skyline. They are ugly, knotty and are a pain to clone out in Photoshop. Gives me the carpal tunnel, I tell you, every time I have to clone out 100 wires hanging from every imaginable (and some un-imaginable as well) poles and hooks before uploading a photo to flickr.

Truly yours,

The cables are going underground too and a pilot was completed in MG (N.H)Road.

As for the hoarding removal, wasn’t it a court order and applicable all over Tamilnadu?

fantastic post, remove the freaking wires mr. corporation ridiculous. it spoils the entire fucking skyline. Do you mr. corporation even know how aweful it is to take a picture of a beautiful temple with blue sky in the backdrop only to later see there are 347 million fucking wires screwing up the whole wonder of the architecture that stands to marvel your senses.

I believe it is a little too early to commend the corporation for the hoardings. I think this Govt. has gone back on a lot of things (the helmet rule for one, the fines on spitting for another, traffic on CP Ramaswamy road for yet another, etc.)

That said, I do believe this is one of the best things that this Govt has done if not the only one. They were so busy distributing stuff they said they would and now they find that there is going to be an election soon and I guess they are slowly waking up to do some real work. Good start anyway….

P.S: Chandrachoodan, I am sure ad agencies are going to come up with some novel ideas to sustain business – like hanging the ads on hot air balloons? That would be good subjects for photography too and you can save your fingers from the clone tool :) For the moment, yes, I do agree the festoons of wires "are" a pain in the carpals…

Only talk on cleaning canal and rivers, only talk on mosquitoes, trees cut down and the ‘replacement’ saplings left to die…

[…] Second, the removal of the hoardings. I’d written earlier about it. Personally, I never had a problem with the city’s billboards. While not all of them were […]
