Ratna Cafe at Velachery

Triplicane Ratna Cafe opened its 3rd outlet in Chennai at Velachery by-pass road today (April 23, 2006). Started in 1948 at Tiruvallikeni, opened its second outlet at Venkatnarayana Road, T Nagar.

The restaurant is known for its Sambar Idlis. I remember to have gone to Triplicane Ratna Cafe, all the way from Linghi Chetty Street with my uncle. There will be a person who will be watching the plates of the guests and without even a request, he will be providing a refill of the sambar. I am yet to visit the Velachery outfit.

Triplicane Ratna Cafe at Velachery

When I was setting the camera to take a photograph of Ratna Cafe at Velachery, an elderly person on his evening walk told me that a decent restaurant has come to the locality. After opening its outlet in Venkatanarayana Road and Velachery, the hotel is planning to open a 18,000 sq ft outlet opposite to Madras Christian College in Tambaram.

Velachery appears to be the most happening place in town with all big names coming in.

BTW, why McDonalds has not opened its outlet in Chennai?

So, it carries Triplicane everywhere like Fruit Shop carries Greams Road. At times you get confused having to say two place names for the same place.

And people, why do you need McD there? There’s nothing better than idly sambar.

I do remember reading an Ad calling for space by Mac Donalds couple of months back. Soon we will have McD outlets in Chennai

    Hi Guys,
Ratna Cafe is now a days owned by the guys who own Picnic Hotel – the place next to Central. Picnic itself has been quiet popular for many years now and these guys have been careful to maintain the same standards at Ratna too.
And yes, what ever you guys outside Madras may say, McDonalds is missed here. And why did they skip this city anyway. It is strange, because even the INOX guys have come to all kinds of places (like Indore! I think) & not come here – the biggest movie city in the world!
This is the happening city, and for all of us who live here, we would like to see everything here – the good & the bad! Idli & Burger, Temples & Multiplexes, Mornings at the beach & evenings at night clubs (that not yet! – like McDonald!).

I would anyday prefer RAtna Cafe’s idli sambar or for that matter KArpagambal mess’s pongal vada to Mcdonalds burger.
