Kosmix: A next generation Search Engine
The search engine Kosmix is different. How? And why is a Search Engine featured in Chennai Metroblog?
Kosmix is a second generation Search Engine in its nascent stage. Type “Chennai” (or any travel destination, for that matter) and select “Travel”. You’ll appreciate it then. Not only is it well organized in terms of the search results, so that I don’t spend a lot of time looking for, say, Hotel Chains from several million matches, but it also links to travel guides written by people and travelogues.
It doesn’t stop just with Travel. The Health search feature of Kosmix is just about the best one around – enter a generic term, say “Allergies”, and the search result is categorized by the different kinds of allergies, symptoms, prevention and remedy. So if I want to know about how about the symptoms of a certain affliction, I can use the links categorized as “Symptoms” and not waste time visiting links about research papers on Medicine. Kosmix has a few other Search Categories, and are expected to expand.
Now to the second part. Why is a Search Engine featured in Chennai Metroblog? Here’s the answer: Venky Harinarayan and Anand Rajaraman, the founders of Kosmix, (who went to Stanford University along with Sergey Brin) are from IIT Madras. Isn’t it something to be proud of?
Travel results are quite good. I found a nice Personal travel summary for a place I’m planning to visit soon which I couldn’t get from Google, Yahoo and MSN.
Jacky: Oh, wow, glad that Kosmix helped and Google/Yahoo/MSN didn’t.
the site is still in the beta stages and is specific some area like health, travel and video games. other searches apparently cant be done.
Nandhu: Yes. That’s why I said nascent stage. (When I tried it first, it was in Alpha ) I do have faith that it’ll evolve, and when it does, it will making searching a lot easier.
Excellent site. Thank you. I got to know of this just at the right moment :-)
F E R R A R I: You’re welcome! (I assume you are planning a trip somewhere)
at last IIT students have done something useful
HEHE: Why would anyone say that? They do a lot of useful things.
