Madras Eye

Does anyone know how the eye infection conjunctivitis, got its name Madras eye? There are many cities in the world, with climate similar to chennai. So conjunctivitis is what it should be called right?
Or is it like, only madrasis call it as madras eye?

no, even down south it’s called madras eye.

something to do with chennai’s reputation of being a hot city and the belief that the heat causes the condition, i think.

Must be because of those thick shades MGR and Karunanidhi made famous.

In America it’s popularly called pink-eye. I never heard of Madras eye till I got here. My guess is that it’s only in Tamil Nadu that it is called that. Possibly big cities are/were hotbeds of disease because of overcrowding, and hence TN villagers felt that if they visited Madras they would come back sick.
