I was looking at this hostel bookers site sometime back. Just like that checked the hostels/budget hotels available in chennai. Am pleasantly surprised. They do list many good hotels and hostels at affordable prices. For instance, I saw this 10 bed dorm with AC in Hotel Elements, Wallace Garden road for 375 Rs/peson. Ideal for marriage parties etc. Better than making them sleep on a carpet which smells of betel nut, flowers and what not!

While discussing about this topic, Chenthil sent me the link of this article from The Hindu which mentions ‘ The Chennai Youth Hostel in Indira Nagar is an ideal stopover for the globetrotter on a shoestring budget’.

You can become a lifetime member of Youth Hostel association by paying a one time fee of Rs. 1100.00. This will entitle you to discounts in youth hostels across the world. For example, you can get Bed and Breakfast in London at 5 pounds a day, in Kensington. If you are a regular globetrotter this will be pretty useful.

If alone, I had known this I would have become a member and saved lots of money in accommodation:)
