Chennai’s answer to Prithvi Theatre of Mumbai!
Thanks Krithiga for the Amadeus post. Chennai now proudly boasts of its very own theatre festival.
Yes, it is the Chennai Hindu Metro Plus Theatre Festival that I’m talking about. Starts on 4th August and runs through till 14th August, 2006. So, it is play time folks as the organisers have rightly put it. Chennai has had a fairly rich tradition as far as theatre goes, but somehow it has never hogged the limelight. This festival aims to bring the best of theatre to the local Chennaite from within the country and abroad.
We have our very own Michael Muthu (Boardwalkers) and Mithran Devanesan (Madras Players) amongst the performers. I think one should watch for Macbeth by Ad Guru Alque Padamsee and ‘A very British affair’ from Escape Theatre, Singapore. Those are my picks.
There is also a workshop being planned as part of the festival. Interesting to see an impressive list of sponsors led by Bose supporting the festival. Just in case you wanna catch a play, buy tickets online.
