The Clean Sweep

In the last few months, I’ve come to realize that Chennai is still a very green city. In spite of trees being felled to make way for multi-storeyed buildings, most roads are tree-lined. I remember seeing an aerial view photograph of Chennai sometime ago and thinking, “wow! so many trees!”
In the same wowing list, one must add the transformation of the parks. When I saw the May Day park, I almost fell off my vehicle. It was so clean and green and you can imagine what a transformation that is from its earlier avatar. Likewise several other once famous parks have all gotten a facelift in the recent months.

The Corporation of Chennai website has a special section for parks, its development and maintenance. For instance did you know that the Corporation maintains about 230 parks in Chennai? That traffic medians, avenue footpaths, traffic islands are all under a conscious green drive? What I found particularly interesting in the website was the status page about improvement work currently in progress in various parts of Chennai. For a government behemoth, the Corporation of Chennai does seem to have well-oiled wheels.
