Living amongst Celebrities
Living in Alwarpet has its own advantages. Whenever you mention it in a gathering, your snob value goes up a notch. People think of the bungalows of Chittaranjan Road, Venus Colony, Kasturi Rangan Road and so on. Never mind that you live in a 700 sq ft flat at the periphery of Alwarpet.
Alwarpet has its share of celebrities and have beens. Currently there are two houses coming up around my block of flats. The one that shares the rear wall is a more famous celebrity – Mu. Ka. Stalin. If you are from outside Tamilnadu, he is the son of the current Chief Minister and is a minister in the present cabinet. He is widely tipped to be the next CM if his father passes away now. The house he is building has its entrance in Chittaranjan Road, and shares a compound wall with us.
The house that is coming up in a plot adjacent to ours is being built by the Carnatic Singer Sudha Raghunathan. I am not much into the Carnatic music scene, I just know that she is by far the famous singer at present.
But long before these worthies decided to by my neighbours, there was another celebrity who lived a few houses away in the opposite side of the road. His name was well known and any autorickshaw driver would get you there without running in circles. I am talking about the one and only Goundamani.
oh you be careful, now – with Stalin as your neighbour, I mean! Why is it that I don’t believe it could be a good thing?
I pray for the longevity of our beloved Kalaignar
I pray for the longevity of our beloved Kalaignar
And if Suppamani’s prayers go unanswered, you can expect some fireworks, quite literally, around your house. :D
chenthil, stalin i heard loves vodka, and enjoys his drink. maybe he could do with some company? Wat say?
Is it really important to reside near celebrities? What else do you gain except some boost to your ego apart from the jealousy of some of your friends? In any case children of celebrities are mostly spoilt brats who have no respect for the law or society.I wouldnt want my children to grow up in such an environment.
Ma Ka Stalin, what a funny name doesn’t sound like a local name is this guy from Russia or something. Who the hell would name there son Stalin?
Kamal Haasan too lived in Alwarpet until recently. His office is still there…
Good old writer Sujatha is a resident of Alwarpet, so was GK Moopanar, and now his son GK Vasan lives there.
You have omitted to remember so amny other celceberatied; Director K. Balachandar, Late Udayar,………..and me too
I’ve always wondered who would name their son after one of the worlds worst mass murderers!
Randramble, BB, Suppamani – there are a lot of celebrities living in Alwarpet. I was talking only about those who live in the same street as me.
Thad – He was born in 1950s, when India was fond of USSR and Stalin. His dad being against the establishment (then), might have thought it cool to name his son after a revolutionary. The world came to know about the Mass murderer only after his death.
Desigirl, I read a lot between those lines.
Vatsan, sure. I would invite you to the party.
