Chennai Tops List of Indian Cities
A survey conducted by ECA International has concluded that Singapore is the best city to live in, and Chennai tops the list of Indian cities. In India though, perception and reality are different things.

perception and reality are different things.
Ummm…. Yes?
Good Post! Thanks Vatsan.
But Chennai is more of an International City than just a Indian city.
I think it tops the list from below. How’s it possible to live with all that endless filthy lakes, drainages etc.?
Then think about how poor it must be in the other cities in India to be ranked below Chennai in the survey
But Chennai is more of an International City than just a Indian city.
Really? Since when? :D
Chennai Tops List of Indian Cities
Probably tops in corruption…
Ha what a joke, even thought Chennai has topped the list compared to other cities India’s general standards of the cities is not that high. Indian cities are certainly not comparable to international cities as we have poor drinking water supply, poor swerage systems, no good electricity connections, poor roads the list goes on an on.It will take many more years before any city in India can be compared to other foreign cities.
I ve been reading the so called COMMENTS by various people regarding various blog posts.
All i see is negative thoughts portraid as comments.Whenever a blogger writes a blog all
i see is people giving negative comments, especially about Chennai.I think Chennai is one
of the safest places in India compared to the so called Metros. I hope whoever comments
negative about Chennai are not Chennaites. Insted of cribbing at the water shortage and
supply of electricity why dont you guys stop wasting water and electricity. This way you
can not only conserve natural resources but also can create awareness on making the best
use of resources. Dont just blame the system, try to change it yourself.
Chennai metblogs by now, must be having atleast 20-30 posts on the city being the greatest amongst the metros incl. B’lore and Hyd. You guys surely take the cake for having an inferiority complex about your city and trying to put down other cities consistently. If you really want to change the perception about Chennai in the minds of “non-madrasis”, this is definitely not the way to achieve it.
Mr. Naveen,
The Chennai Metblog is designed to be about the city.So it natural that you will find many articles that will state how good this city is. City to us is like a child to the mother. So no wonder every mother thinks her child is the best.
Atleast we are not going to other blogs and ridiculing the posts about the city. If at all you want to say something, please put in your entries to the respective city you come from.
Well said Satish….As i said before, there are always negative COMMENTS about this beautiful land.It is where i was born and Chennai is like my child and it is so for everyone.Though i am in B’lore i sure miss my Chennai.
Madras (note that I still call it as it used to be) is the most under-rated city in India. I lived for the first 22 years in Mds before living all over the place. I can tell that the city is itself to blame for its “under-rating”. We cannot change the weather but we can
1.Get rid of thugs who pass off as Auto drivers
2.stop Be-littling other languages (pls note that it is different from chest thumping Tamil)
3.stop defending old socialist thoughts. Latest example is guys trying to block Reliance fresh
Raghuram, i cant agree with your second point
“stop Be-littling other languages (pls note that it is different from chest thumping Tamil)”
I live in Bangalore and i havent seen any buses here with their routes inscribed in English. But when you see the buses in Chennai they are written both in English and Tamil.
“Atleast we are not going to other blogs and ridiculing the posts about the city. If at all you want to say something, please put in your entries to the respective city you come from.”
Thought I had some basic freedom of speech on any metblog. And why will I post something concerning Chennai on some other metblog?
The basic problem I notice is that many people here are happy dissing the living conditions in other cities, especially after earning their bread and butter living there. If you want to say that your mother is the best, its cool as long as you don’t point fingers at my mother. And that’s not the way to make people from other cities understand the USP’s of Chennai.
I live in Bombay(for me it will always remain Bombay. Being a native I have a lot of affection for the city. No doubt Chennai is the best amongst all the metros, I have not worked in Chennai but the recent survey and studies by various agencies have only reported in a positive way. Opportunity wise and professionally Chennai certainly has a lot to offer. For ALL THE MORONS who crib about this historic city be sensible and evaluate the positive points about the city. Bangalore – an overly hyped city is just an over grown village which lacks infrastructure, hello there read the news papers and my friends in Bangalore say that they have alot of powercuts, water is a perennial problem atleast Chennai has the sea to build desalination plant and meet its water needs in future what the hell does Bangalore have.
As regards for the climate this past 20days Bangalore temperature is consistently higher than Chennai. Let the lazy lousy jerks from Bangalore or the tribe which keeps snubbing Chennai realize that in Bangalore it does not snow. THe climate is lousy as also everything about the city. PUBS alone does not make a city great. All those “PARTY TYPES” whenever you crib about lack of night life, how would you describe nightlife?”Being immoral”, I can for sure say that most of these sloths are immoral swines. GO TO HELL(BANGALORE).
Recent statistics also shows Chennai air traffic is way ahead of Bangalore. Vijay Mallya may be a Bangalorean and try to fly every possible city but what about the financial viability.
All non-Chennai-ites or should I call Madras’is, I apologize for the name confusion. Stop cribbing about Madras and develop a sense of gratitude for you are earning your living in Madras.
I think that the city is more mother to the child than child to the mother.
Sometimes the mother is the one we yearn to get away from; sometimes the mother is the one that just will not give us what we want; sometimes the mother just plain embarrasses us to our friends.
But sometimes the mother is the one we just have to get back to, and always the mother is the one who is there.
And what’s so special about Reliance Fresh anyway? It is new — it is fresh! How long will that last? Yes, the veggies are fresher and better-looking than another chain I could mention, but we can find that in the local market anyway.
The bread is not too bad…
yes it does … pollution levels are highest in chennai when compared to others metros and bangalore :) … be it air, water … we top it all ;)
One party protesting Reliance fresh has nothing to do with Capitalism or Socialism. Even in the US there are plenty of protests against WalMart. Big retail does have detrimental effect on small traders. But that is part of the “survival of the fittest” logic.
Mumbai is the dirtiest city in India. You cant step out of your house without running into a slum.65% of the population lives in slums. Most of the footpaths are occupied by slumdwellers.the city is famous for the underworld, bargirls etc. Even housewives and college students have no qualms in offering their bodies for money.Only money matters in Mumbai.Atleast 15 people die everday in local train related accidents.People earning handsome salaries travel like animals in crowded local trains. They have to pay huge EMIs for 20 years for a flat the size of a matchbox, 25 kms away from workplace. The famous beaches (Juhu,Girgaon& Gorai)are virtual sewage dumps with jet black water and revolting smell. The nail in Mumbai’s coffin is that its a favourite of terrorists.
I love this city, although I have made many posts decrying its negative points. The intention was not to be negative or run down the city, but to sensitize readers to the problems facing it so that we can build a ground swell of public opinion as a positive pressure. Similarly, there is absolutely nothing wrong in celebrating the city’s achievements. Chennai is emerging as the Indian economic tiger, and along the way, if an independant survey has said it is the best Indian city to live in, thats worth celebrating. It neither gives us an inferiority complex or a swollen head. We will discuss our city’s negative or positive points because this blog is about Chennai. if that bothers you, go read something else.

AS IT IS CINEMA TICKET PRICES SHOULD BE DETERMINED BY THE MARKET FORCES AND NOT BY GOVERNMENT.
I DO HOPE TO SEE MY CHENNAI GROW RAPIDLY AND BECOME NUMBER ONE THE BEST MOST DEVELOPED,MODERN, MOST VIBRANT CITY IN INDIA.COME ON ALL YOU CHENNIATES LETS GET TIS MESSAGE FORWARD AND MOVE THIS CITY AHEAD TO GREAT HEIGHTS AND RIGHTFULLY GET A CITY WE DESERVE AND A CITY WE ARE PROUD TO LIVE IN AND SHOW TO THE REST INDIA AND THE WHOLE THE WORLD WHAT CAN BE DONE.
John:
While I agree with many of the items that you have listed, presence of McDonalds or TGIF may not necessarily mean progress or being hip.
There was a movie released in the US last year called Fast Food Nation. I don’t know if it was released in India. If the readers of this blog get a chance please see this movie.
As an American, I can vouch. You do not want TGI Fridays. Do you know how happy their waiters and waitresses have to be?
Its frightening.
I am also pretty sure McD’s dont view India as a viable market because they arent big on actual (meat-laden) burgers.
Sidenote: What Indian actually wants a representation of western fatness in their city? As a New Yorker, I can tell you the emergence of a glut of national chains has in some ways given the perception the city is losing a part of itself.
Chennai is great. I really enjoyed it, even the choking air and soot in my snots. It also has amazing potential I feel is being realized, and I look forward to see how it develops. I doubt the people of Chennai will let them get to crazy.
