03:11 PM on 03/11 – Defining a moment of Mannady (Chennai)
It was a working day. Some meetings were scheduled. And I had to be present in the Office.
In between I took a break for half an hour. Walked into the Mannady Street to shoot images for 03.11 PM on 03/11 – Defining a moment of Chennai.
The place is close to my Office at Rajaji Salai (North Beach Road).

This is a familiar place as our residence was at Linghi Chetty Street, School at Thambu Chetty Street and frequently visited friends living in an around Mannady area. In the sixties and seventies the place was more of a residential area with some trading and commercial establishments. Now the place has changed fully into commercial area with offices of transport operators, hardware shops, clearing agents etc., with less of residences. Omni buses proceeding to Ramanathapuram, Keezhakarai etc., also start from here. I present some of the images shot between 03.10 to 03.15 PM.

The shops which I had seen during school days have gone and some new shops have taken their place. There was a shop selling coconut in the place of the cool drink shop. In one cool drink shop I saw a board Jhigir Dhanda – Rs 10/-.. Also I found this drink being sold in Trichy during my recent visit. The taxi driver at Trichy informed me that it is a curd preparation, which tastes like lassi.
I started taking the photographs from 03.10 pm onwards and the following photograph taken at around 03.11.36 is uploaded to the official 03.11pm on 3/11 web site

We do not find Cycle Rickshaws in many parts of Chennai now. Cycle Rickshaws are common in this part of Chennai. To cover short distances, these Rickshaws were an affordable means of transport. This businessman in rickshaw looks like striking a deal over his mobile.
The short break for 03:11 pm on 03/11 kindled nostalgic memories of the past
Fantastic, Balu! A good capture of various moods of daily life in few minutes… The bullock-cart snap with tired faces of the men and the beast, especially with the ‘Life Styles’ board… though common in few localities in the city, does leave an impact… slaps hard on the face about the truth on survival tactics & living conditions in the city.
