888888 – Did you do your bit?
Well, I did my bit – Passed on the message to one and all i know in Chennai, my Company switched off the Lights and power for the 8 minutes, and so did all my apartment people.
Most of the major IT companies like Infosys and Sify too had taken part in this and so did our Raj Bhavan.
I was really happy that my Company took this cause in a very enthusiastic way, by sending mails to the associates on the importance of this, right from the start of this week to the company hotline calling all the employees in their mobile phones informing them to shutdown the computers by 8pm.
Finally at sharp 8pm on August 8th for 8 minutes, the whole power to the Office was switched off.
Fella Chennaite, Share with us your bit, what your company or you did for 888888?
For those who supported this cause, a “thank you” from the bottom of my Heart!
I think we did create “awareness on the message on Global warming”. Let’s march towards a greener Earth.
Whats the relationship between 88888 and global warming. If you are talking of energy crisis – sounds sensible. But why global warming.. ?
I only think we are over reacting !
Besides, I’d recommend "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton to understand the ground reality of Global Warming. Actually, there’s nothing much to fear about it.
Well, For starts – It all about awareness.

For second, Research have been done by scores of people all over the world on the ill effects of Global Warming.
Even if you do not want to believe all that, I still would defend them saying It would cause no harm to anyone by saving as much power as we can, saving fuel, growing more trees etc.
praddy: you are 100% right. global warming is something that will kill us and by pumping out CFC’s we are going to accelerate the process but still global warming has been occurring for centuries mate. Its a natural process of life and we are all going to be dead sooner or later. Fact of the matter is we cannot influence global warming, its a process of NATURE and even if we could it cannot be realistic enough. For the heck of an example lets say if we’re gonna die in 500 years, probably (pulling right one out off thin air) we may live for another 200 years if we reduce emissions but still, we are gonna die in 700 years and there is nothing you can do about it. That is how it works.
Saving fuel is a slightly off beat issue. We need alternate fuel which has minimal emissions and residue. Fuel Cell technology or Electrical vehicles would be the best bet but i guess we would take another 50 years to see affordable and practical fuel cell cars on the road. For now only Madonna and Elton john are gonna be able to afford them.
It was the dinosaurs and it was the apes and now its our turn. We will be replaced by better creatures that can survive better than us in probably a few million years from now. Unfortunately growing excessively over sized brains the human race thinks it can control things with nature and evolution. It is rather true to a very minor extent but pure rubbish for most parts. If you have time just watch the Penn and Teller series "Global Warming – Bullshit" episode from their bullshit series. They talk out things in plain english so that even dummies like me can understand things clearly. Its a fantastic eye opener to such issues.
I do however agree with you that for the time being since we don’t have alternatives, nothing is better than saving fuel and car pooling and working on alternative fuels. However i do believe that a country like india cannot afford to bring in alternative fuel technologies on a wide scale like the USA can do. We cannot implement the "membrane technology" singapore gave us free of cost for recycling the drinking water in the most effective and fastest way possible. Fuel projects are at least 50 times as expensive, i guess. I see no ray of hope for india to implement it with a democracy. China could probably do it despite the population because the communist government can move resources around like they want. I mean, if they can kill so much for olympics, i bet they would kill more for fuel projects. Head count is not an issue for both countries and the value of life is very cheap.
We can’t even move 40 huts along saidapet bridge and those people die every year during rains when the koovam over floods. Talk about issues, we got a lot of them :-(
Dilip
Apologies, I missed out on this.
Firstly thanks for taking so much time to comment :)
I just understood the process of nature from ur comment but still a difference of 200 years itself would be a great achievement right provided we work towards it..
Let me check the Penn and teller series and get back too.
@praddy: yes, if i can live a day longer (and get laid and have a kid too) my evolutionary requirement has been fulfilled just like every animal or organism has to. unfortunately, global warming is not something we’re going to stop. the earth had something called "ice age" if you remember. this was a few million years back. im assuming we sure will have the warm age or the hot age.
